Artist Dick Patterson – Stained Glass

Dick Patterson and his wife Sarah moved to Huntley Hills in 2010 from Indianapolis, where he was a math professor. A daughter and grandsons live in Brookhaven and they enjoy being closer to family.

One day in Indianapolis they went out to buy a ceiling light fixture. The only one they liked was made of stained glass. They took a six-session course and made their own.

Then they decided to put a window in their front door. Dick held a piece of cardboard behind some lilies and drew their shadow on the paper. After a good deal of tweaking to get a design that could be cut out of glass, they then made the window. It was installed so permanently in the door that it had to be sold with the house when they moved to Georgia.

Sarah still helps occasionally with one of the steps in the process, but Dick now is the most involved. He does some projects “on spec”, but much prefers to work on commissions.

Some friends showed him a window from an English pub and asked if he could take elements of the design and make two others to flank it. After he had worked out a satisfactory design they drove together to a glass store, picked out the glass, and had a nice lunch. The final products were the left and right cherry windows, which the friends decided they liked better than the original.

Working together with a customer lets them choose the size, design and colors to be used. The project can be a panel built into a door or framed. Or it can be a three-dimensional object such as a butterfly, lampshade, tissue box cover or flower.

He has taken on several miscellaneous jobs such as repainting the sign in the park and guiding the manufacture and installation of the third Huntley Hills sign on Admiral Dr. across from the High School.
