My colleagues and I have been working on a project to standardize Environmental Health data collection state-wide and make restaurant and tourist accommodation inspections available online, for the general public. It is a work in progress; we now have over 130 out of 159 counties using the same system and their inspections are available through our Public Health website:
The CDC estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases. Our hope is that by having restaurant inspections available online, consumers will be empowered to make informed choices about where to eat and restaurant owners/operators will be extra motivated to ensure their facilities are clean and all safety requirements are followed.
Try finding your favorites and see how they do.
I encourage you to forward this information to friends and family throughout Georgia. If anyone has any comments or suggestions in regards to the website, search engine, etc – please contact me at the below info. Also, it is very easy to create an online list of restaurants with direct links – I’m happy to show anyone how to do it. We would love for newspapers, local governments, etc to help us share the information.
Questions about individual inspections can be directed to the local Environmental Health offices (contact info available through the searches). There are hundreds of hard-working Environmental Health Specialists in Georgia and they are the ones who have done the real work to make this possible.
